My Approach

I bring a combination of systemic and humanistic approaches to my therapeutic work. By systemic I am referring to everyone and everything being connected in some way, and this draws me to focus on relationships and the interactions taking place within them, including the old and new roles that are being expressed. By humanistic I think of therapy as basically involving the empowerment or expansion of a person’s existing positive functioning rather than the pathologising of their coping or survival functioning. In this task the therapist follows the client’s story about their lives and collaborates with them to co-create new understandings and solutions that lead to the client fulfilling their purpose for coming to therapy. Therapy then becomes a shared journey of new discoveries for both client and therapist.
